The sound card on my Toshiba laptop has gone out. So is it worth it to get a new card or just get a new laptop.

You can get an external USB sound card. I have seen them at Best Buy and other places. It will at least let you plug in extra speakers and won't cost as much as a new laptop.

It depends on your desire. If you often use your laptop in very compact spaces, I would say that you might be unhappy with getting an external sound card. Because everything in laptops are pretty hard-wired, there isn't any way to replace the dead sound card itself.
So, it'll be cheaper for an external sound card, but if your sound card has died, and its not under warranty you may choose to go for a new laptop.
